Consider both Carver’s “A Small, Good Thing” and these three Edward Hopper paintings I’ve gathered here.

Think: What are the similarities?  Can you make any connections between the story and these visual texts?  After examining all three, select on painting for your discussion.  Consider how body language, composition, setting, color all shape your response to these works, and ultimately, how those elements relate to “A Small, Good Thing.”

Now, put both of these works into a conversation. Identify a few passages in the Carver story that holds meaning for you and forge a connection to one of the Hopper paintings; discuss both texts in your journal.
